I am Rachel Hou. I joined the High School Equivalency (HSE) program at Lincoln Education Center in 2018. My goal was to transfer to the High School Diploma (HSD) program once I improved my Reading and English skills. In 2019, I was able to join the HSD program and I am proud to say that I will be graduating in LEC’s ceremony soon, June 2019.
I would like to share with you the two main reasons why I came to Lincoln Education Center. The first reason is that I really wanted to complete my high school education as I was unable to do so in Taiwan because of the immigration to the U.S. in January 2017. My junior year in high school, I was suddenly told by my parents that we were moving to the U.S. Therefore, I stopped attending high school and went to English school to prepare for my move to the US. The other reason I came LEC was to continue learning and improving my English skills in order to someday attend college.
In the HSE program, my teachers not only helped me to improve my English skills but also helped me to overcome the anxiousness I had as a new immigrant. On my first day, Mrs. Browning kindly welcomed me, helping me to relax and feel comfortable in this new place. Mrs. Browning’s reading lessons were at a slow and relaxing pace which helped me to overcome my dislike and fear of reading long selections. Mrs. Flores’ vocabulary lessons taught me many new vocabulary and her writing lessons gave me opportunities to practice my writing skills. My HSE teachers gave me the confidence I needed to transfer into the HSD program. The high school diploma classes were tougher than I thought, but because of the encouragement I received from Mrs. Browning and Mrs. Flores, I was able to conquer the difficulties and I did well in all my classes. Thanks to the wonderful HSD teachers who guided me along the way, I am now a US High School graduate!
