This course is designed for students who function satisfactorily in the use of English in basic survival situations related to their needs and in most routine situations. Fluency and communication are emphasized with students beginning to learn to correct their own errors. Students can handle entry level jobs that involve limited oral communication skills on a non-technical level, and need clarification when communication breaks down. They have difficulty in interpreting written directions.
Course content is relevant to students’ lives. It integrates language functions and language forms with informational sources, skills and topics. Topics are chosen in accordance with students’ goals—general, educational or vocational.
Cultural aspects such as rules of etiquette common in routine social situations in the United States are taught by focusing on ways the rules contrast with customs in each student’s culture.
