This course is designed for students with limited ability to read and write English. Students can sometimes make their basic needs understood if context strongly supports interaction and in situations with English speakers who are used to dealing with non native speakers. Fluency and communication begin to be emphasized. The instructor begins to assist students in correcting their own errors.
Course content is relevant to students’ lives. It integrates language functions and language forms with informational sources, skills and topics. Topics are chosen in accordance with students’ goals—general, educational or vocational.
Cultural aspects such as social customs and manners (i.e. standing in line, expressing politeness)are taught through modeling positive and negative examples and through controlled practice such as role playing.
